\"Don\'t fail me again...Admiral\"
I was watching The Empire Strikes Back and noticed something that I've noticed in the past but just seemed to brush off and when the Falcon gets away from Admiral Piett, Vader tells him not to fail him again. Yet, the Falcon gets away again, where Piett told Vader that they disabled the Hyperdrive. Then...it gets away from the Tractor Beam. Piett failed him again. Now, why didn't Vader kill him like he did Ozzel?

Re: \"Don\'t fail me again...Admiral\"
By that point in the movie, Vader was too wrapped up in thought with his confrontation with his son to give much attention to Piett.

Yet even so, Vader recognized his potential and value and decided it would be prudent to let him remain living.
First Ozzel, then Needa; it's been a long day.

You'll notice two things: in ESB, Vader doesn't actually kill any good guys. And once he reveals that he is Luke's father, he doesn't kill anyone, except Palpatine.

Kenneth Colley the actor that play Piett, appear in ESB as Capt. Piett, then when Ozzel die Adm. Piett. He is the Adm. of Vader Ship: The Executor, the large scale shuttle that crash in the Second Death Star after a A-Wing crash himself in the ship bridge. He is the only Imperial officer that appear in two Star Wars movies. Appear that you see the Ultimate ROTJ version where Piett have been replaced by a CGI Gungan.

I heard that Ozzel was clumsy and made tons of mistakes. Vader must have thought that entering hyperspace too early, or whatever he did, was the lsat straw.

Re: \"Don\'t fail me again...Admiral\"
Had Vader choked Piett at the end of ESB, it would almost have been comical, which isn't exactly the feel they were going for.
Vader: I warned you, Admiral...
Piett grasps his throat and struggles to breath. He collapses. As he struggles on the floor, Vader walks over to a group of three Lieutenant Commanders standing together rather unconfortably.
Vader: Who's next?
The two on the outside glance at each other and take one step back. The poor sap in the middle suddenly realizes he is standing alone.
Vader: Don't fail me...Admiral.
The new Admiral whimpers.
Sorry, wouldn't work.

Or, is needn't bet comical and he could have gone into a sith -like rage and killed everyone on the bridge.
But then that would make vader look like some kind of bad guy

But isn't one of Vader's qualities in the OT the fact that he is always in control, even when killing people? Pretty un-Anakin-like.
Although, he might have been glad that, while he didn't have Luke, neither did the Emperor. As of ESB, I beleive that Vader had no intention of taking Luke to the Emperor.

Yeah I corrected my self he was in the scene during the attack on the Death Star II. The Star Destroyer that Had an A-Wing plow through the bridge causing it to crash into the DS. Piett was the Admiral of that ship if I'm not mistaken.

Re: \"Don\'t fail me again...Admiral\"
Piett should have been killed-the look he gives at the end of ETB-he thinks his time is up as well.
I believe that Lucas intended not to bring Piett back for ROTJ and hoped that we the audience would just assume that Piett had indeed been killed.

How would we assume that, if he's standing right there in front of us??
But really, why do you believe that?? What in anything that has been said or mentioned says that Lucas was not going to bring back Piett!!
Oh and I gotta chime in, perhaps those who supposedly understand the entire saga, one should go back and look where it all started from!! "If one is to understand the great Saga, one must study all its aspects, not just the dogmatic, narrow view of the OT purists." It works both ways!!

I mean, why did Lucas put in that shot of Piett looking dreadingly at Vader if he wasn't implying that the end was near.
It just seems strange that Piett returned when no other Imperial officer has returned. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I think bringing Piett back was a brilliant idea-I think he's a cool character-but by Lucas's standards, I just thought it was odd.

To emphasize how lost in thought Vader was. Obviously Piett thought he was a dead man (thus the look), so when he isn't killed, even though we expected it because of the shot of Piett, we realize how distracted Vader is by thoughts of his son. By seeing Piett's emotion and not getting the expected result, it's reflected right back onto Vader to give us an understanding of his own train of thought at that moment.

If Lucas originally intended Piett to die in between tESB and RotJ, then he filmed those shots of Vader - pondering in silence, too disappointed to become angry at anyone - for nothing. I think the scene makes pretty clear Vader walks away (probably off to his meditation chamber) and is not in the mood to kill anyone. The shot of Piett as Vader walks past, was there to show he was still alive and that Vader wasn't gonna kill him anytime soon.

Re: \"Don\'t fail me again...Admiral\"
What does using MisterKneobi's quote have to do with this thread LJ? You lost me.
From seeing Jedi I always thought Vader was still getting over the duel with his son and pondering how this interaction would shape their futures. The Millenium Falcon's escape was not very important to him. He knew their paths would cross again.

Exactly!! It was a huge deal that Piett was not killed!! It led to the crediblilty that he was Luke's father. He just lost his son, he didn't bother to kill off Piett for failing him!!

Re: \"Don\'t fail me again...Admiral\"
I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but I get the faintest impression that Vader (gasp) respected Piett to some degree. When Piett tells Vader about the approaching shuttle with Han and co. onboard, and says "I was about to clear them", it seems remarkably bold considering Vader obviously has doubts about the shuttle. Vader and Piett seem almost seem to hold mutual respect for each other.
I dunno, maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Oh, definitely.
By the time ROTJ rolled around, it definitely seemed like Piett had proved himself to Vader and didn't have to tip-toe around him anymore.

Re: \"Don\'t fail me again...Admiral\"
Did Vader actually kill Needa? The last thing you hear when Ozzel is killed is the snapping of his windpipe. With Needa you don't hear that. He leans over then passes out on the floor. There is no "crack" of his windpipe. A person who is being choaked passes out before they die. They aren't conscious and then instantly dead unless the windpipe is snapped as with Ozzel. I think Vader just choaked him until he passed out as a warning, hence the [censored] "apology accepted" remark. When the two guards carry him away, he does move a leg slightly (of course this might just be bad acting for a dead man).

It's not nitpicking at straws, it's analyzing the scenes. Unless Hobo can back himself up, Piett, nor Needa appeared in the movie. Although Needa was mentioned in several pages of the ROTS novelization.

What's the point of analyzing the scene if the original intent was for Needa to die?

Apparently he was demoted after that. "Admiral" Piett appears in ROTJ wearing a captain's insigna. I'm not sure if this snafu was corrected for the dvd release.
